Hello lovely flist!

I'm looking for music recommendations. I've got an iTunes card and I'm dying to use it.

What are you all listening to out there? What's tickling your fancy (or whatever else you like to have tickled)?

Right now, I'm kind of obsessed with The Pierces, thanks to [livejournal.com profile] andbeloved, but I'll listen to just about anything twice. Also on heavy rotation is Jason Mraz, Tori Amos, Bjork, Gnarls Barkley, Kanye West & Beyonce' (who knew?)

So, recommenz me some artists and tell me why you like them so much. Please? &hearts

I'm completely in love with Tilly and the Wall right now. The band includes a tap dancer who is the beat, pretty sweet huh?

How about some old-school rap/hip hop (e.g. LL Cool J, Run-DMC, Kurtis Blow, KRS-One, etc.)? Or maybe some more laid-back stuff like DJ Shadow. Oh, I think you might like David Axelrod. DJ Shadow sampled one of his songs for Midnight in a Perfect World:

Oh, I've also been enjoying some '80s electro-funk (Afrika Bambataa, Cindy Mizelle, Shannon, etc.)

My three big listens right now are:

The Cat Empire - Australian pop-type group, that has some elements of rap, and a big Cuban jazz influence. Sounds odd, but really good. 2 lead singers, one of which is super hot.

Nicole Atkins - I think if you like Tori, you'll like her, although the style is very different. Her orchestrations are very lush, and her melodies are actually complex. Not your basic pop, but she fits on the tail end of that catagory - I've also seen her listed as "psychedellic".

The Puppini Sisters - Totally off the wall, not at all my normal thing, yet.... They are 3 sisters who sing a la Andrews Sisters - 1930's girl band harmonies. They do a lot of the classics, like Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy, In The Mood, Heart of Glass, I Will Survive.... Yeah. :) Their second disk, which I don't have, also has Walk Like an Egyptian and Crazy in Love.

All of these can be found on You Tube, Amazon, iTunes, etc. Have fun!

Tiger Army, specifically III: Ghost Tigers Rise. Psychobilly at its best. The songs are catchy, make you wanna dance around.

Ah, my tastes right now have been running towards folk, folk-rock, country, and, as always, bluegrass. That being said, here are my current favorites, and if you can find them, awesome! :D The links are to videos on YouTube.

Lyle Lovett -- If I Had A Boat | In My Own Mind

This guy is sweet, charming, and has an earthiness and quirky kind of humor that I love. He's also a great song writer, but check out his covers of Townes Van Zandt songs, especially "Highway Kind". It's one of the most haunting songs I've ever heard. Plus I love his curly mop of hair, lol. He's so cute with it. :D

Robinella & the CC Stringband -- Man Over

The band also goes by simply Robinella or RobinElla as well. I can't really explain why I like them so. Their songs are written well and they have a bit of a funky vibe to them. Not so much in "Man Over," which is a bit more traditional (it's their only video that I know of), but they are something great to listen to if you're out for a day drive. Love 'em.

Tift Merritt -- Good-Hearted Man | Virginia, No One Can Warn You | Broken

Another great songwriter. Again, I can't really explain why I like her, but her music feels easy to connect to and it's almost like a soundtrack to life in general. And, yeah, "Good-Hearted Man" is just a great song. :D

Nickel Creek / Chris Thile -- NC: The Lighthouse Tale | When You Come Back Down | When In Rome | Smoothie Song | CT: Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground

I put these two together because Chris (it's pronounced 'thee-lee,' btw) was part of the band before he went off to do his own thing. I love Nickel Creek, and yeah, they're considered "newgrass," but they do a lot more than just traditional bluegrass songs. There's the haunting tale of the lighthouse and the loving ballad of "When You Come Back Down," juxtaposed against the angry, strange "When In Rome" and the funky, rhythmic instrumental "Smoothie Song". They have a song for every emotion, every occasion. And Chris, well, he's one of the greatest mandolin players in the world at the tender age of 27, so check out his stuff, too. And the other two members, Sean and Sara Watkins? Watch out for them, too, as they're doing solo stuff as well.

Other artists you might like: Buddy Miller, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Mindy Smith, and Billy Joe Shaver.

She & Him

How about She & Him they've got a very retro sound. It's Zooey Deschanel and some musician who's last name is Ward. His album in 2006 was in the top 5 for the year and most of the songs are actually written by zooey. A couple of her inspirations are Carole King and Judy Garland and makes for an interesting sound.

Did I recommend you music for something else before/already?
Oh, well...
Seriously... seriously: Margot & the Nuclear So & So's (if they're on iTunes)
and 30 Seconds to Mars should definitely be on iTunes. I tend to skip around albums and grow attached to the songs, so the only ones I can solidly recommend because I actually remember them are "Edge of the Earth" and "R-Evolve".

Also, Maria Taylor, anyone? I want to marry / steal her voice.
