Hoku gave me a lovely keepsake box that she made herself, and inside were an absolutely lovely pair of silvery teardrop earrings which I have already put on to wear to work today.

The ever-lovely stuckinsea gave me a dozen long-stemmed virtual roses which I must save because LJ deletes them after a time (I've saved every gift she's ever given me), and thrihyrne has written me delicious R/D fic that made me more than a little regretful that I have to leave my hubby and go to work. ;)

All told, it's been a good birthday so far. And I've only been up for 3 1/2 hours!

Well, the girls started school today. I just e-mailed fmh to see how it all went. I was still there to see Hoku off, but not Malu.

Hokulani is 10 (she'll be 11 in October); she starts middle school today, and is beyond excited. She spent the bulk of yesterday packing, unpacking and re-packing her backpack. She's got binders and notebooks and dividers and calculators and pens and pencils and even a compass! (Thanks, mightyafrodite!) She is jazzed. She's taking a bevy of classes, including band (she'll be playing the flute) with her bestest friend, Alex. I can hear the squee-ing already. :) fmh went through and helped her detail her school map so she can get around without getting too lost, and we figured out where her bus picks up, so I think everything will be good there.

Maluhia starts second grade today. I think she's a little afraid, as this is the first year since she's been going to school that she hasn't been going with her sister. Last night she was admanant about not going for a little while, but she seemed to finally accept it. She's going to be in the same class as her best friend who lives down the street from us. I don't know if that's a good or a bad thing... Personally, I think it'll be good for Malu to be away from her sister for a bit. She's used to her sister doing things for her, and as a result, Malu has a strong dependency streak. It'll be good for her to stand on her on two feet and have to handle some things on her own.

I just hope it all goes okay for both of them.

Maluhia brought me back a little trinket ring from the dentist.

fmh said she went digging down to the bottom of the box to find it.

And why?

"Because I have to get that Ron ring for my Mom!"

I feel so loved. And so perverted all at once. :p

The girls are off for Hawai'i. Thankfully, despite fmh's fear to the contrary, everything went well.

I'm going to miss them, but I really, really hope they have fun while they're there.
