at about 2 this morning, i woke up and couldn't go back to sleep. so i decided to watch "brokeback mountain" since i'd never seen it before.

well, that cheered me right up.

-_-

beautiful, beautiful story. really. it's so gorgeous and heartfelt and SAD, holy crap is it sad.

but, i have a question for anyone who's seen it. (so yeah. spoiler alert.)

okay, so when ennis gets the news that jack is dead, and lureen is telling him on the phone how jack was killed, ennis is flashing to jack being beaten to death by two or three guys (i'm assuming homophobes).

now -- are they telling how jack really died, or is ennis sort of working it up in his mind with the help of the memory of the old man who been killed when he was a boy for living with another man?

i don't know why, but this has bugged me all night.

also, is it my imagination, or did jack's mother totally know when ennis showed up?

I thought that they were showing that the polite fiction Jack's wife was telling wasn't the actual truth. I'm not sure if Ennis ever knew for sure what happened, or if he just didn't believe it was an accident.

And yeah, pretty sure Jack's mom knew, perhaps had, but wasn't going to say anything. Kind of like how my parents and I never, ever, talked about my smoking- but they had to know about it.

I always thought that she knew too!

But I'm trying hard to remember the bit where Jack's getting beaten up and I can't.

But srsly. Don't watch it in the middle of the night again. Like, ever. *hugs*

According the book, Ennis at first isn't sure whether it was an accident or gaybashing, but after Jack's father tells Ennis Jack had wanted to move up to his parent's place with another man and run the place, Ennis decides/realizes it was a gaybashing.

And I actually think pretty much everyone in both families knew, they just didn't talk about it.

Yeah, watching Brokeback Mountain at 3 AM? Maybe not the best idea, lol.

I always thought Jack's death scene was for the viewers to show how he really died....hmmmm I never gave it much thought....

I think both Jack's parents knew but of course never truely thought about it.

OMG THAT IS NOT THE MOVIE TO WATCH TO CHEER YOU UP!!! I can't watch it, I saw it in theaters both me and my friend were sobbing by the end. Then the only other time was at home with some friends....I cried even harder the that time.

Its just painful, you feel the confused love they had for each other and how they both knew the world would just hate them for it. It kills me even more because it seem no matter how far we come in the fight for all to be equal, Jack's death could happen tomorrow and people would be shocked but not really surprised.

Theme Song...

I've seen Brokeback Mountain a couple of times...but I JUST found out something about the movie I should've known before.

I'm sure you know, the sad theme music.

IT HAS WORDS. I just thought it was instrumental...

Sad song for sad movie.

I wondered about the same thing, and judging only from the movie I always took it as Ennis imagining what really happened, and whether that really was the truth being left open to interpretation. But a friend of mine read the book, and as far as I can remember she said that Jack does get beaten up and dies.

I saw it in cinema and I didn't sleep all night. I was kinda rattled and totally depressed. It's such an emotionally intense film.

when i first watched brokeback mountain, it was purely out of my lust for boy!love. when the film ended, it changed me forever. the aching feeling inside my soul lingered with me for a really long time.

so glad you finally watched it, it's almost a crime not to witness this love story :)

my two cents worth: clearly, lureen's version of jack's death is untrue, she's just being lureen - cold, politically correct, monotonous. the whole scene where jack is beaten up is conjured inside ennis' mind, since that was his greatest fear for the longest time - that is the reason why he didn't want to go ahead with jack's fairytale plan. ultimately, it doesn't matter HOW jack died. rather, it's the fact that jack IS dead, that truly changes ennis' world.

also, i think both of jack's parents knew. his father pointed out that jack used to talk a lot about ennis to his parents. and i loved that bit when jack's mom rubs her neck with her hand, making it look like she's being strangled, when jack's father speaks to ennis.

SIGH, NOW I FEEL NOSTALGIC AND SLIGHTLY DEPRESSED :(

but, still very glad you got to watch this, bb.
