That's so dumb. People would be getting all kinds of divorced, just because they forgot to "renew."

Well… informally, perhaps. I know a couple here in H'burg who renew their marriage each year at the same time of year. They evaluate what's going on and decide whether or not to renew their own marriage contract to each other. They have every year thus far, but nonrenewal is always an option. It's a bit different, but it works for them!
