i just got the word about the storkcraft drop-side crib recall. of course, that's the kind of crib we have. we've never had any kind of problems with ours, but of course now i'm freaking out because kendra is a roly-poly sleeper and what if she slips down between the side of the crib and the mattress??????!?!?!?
I read that. OMG Yikes! Only the ones with plastic hardware I guess? The company is supposed to be offering a fix that that will make the drop side stationary. You could possibly use 4-6 L brackets to do that yourself if it's too worry-some. (I'm re-thinking the idea of drop down side cribs if we get preggers after this recall. *shudder*) Sounds like drop down side cribs are slowly getting banned.
Panics with you. I saw that and thought how horrible. Like all of these recalls it's only a few people that may have a bad one. But I sure wouldn't risk it.
Do you have a pack n' play or anything else she can camp out in until the fix comes through? How scary. It seems like there's at least one major recall a month on baby gear.
It seems like there's at least one major recall a month on baby gear. It's almost like they do no testing at all on baby stuff. You'd think that would be a major department in Baby Stuff Co.
We got our crib at a garage sale. I cannot for the life of me figure out what brand it is.
I only use the drop side to change the sheets.
My solution (just in case it is a recalled one) is going to be zip ties (you know, those plastic locky-strip thingies?). Get those tight enough around both the frame and the drop side, and it won't be going ANYWHERE. (We've already used them for other "shouldn't move around" things.) Better than duct tape!
Of course, you KNOW what brand you have, so you can order the patch kit from the manufacturer. But zip ties in a pinch! No panic necessary. :)
But if they're recalling it, shouldn't they give you a better one or something? I don't know how this stuff works. BUT I'M PANICKING ON YOUR BEHALF. D:
The manufacturer is giving free repair kits to anyone that asks for one, so I'm definitely going to do that. In the meantime, I'm going to take lil_tater's suggestion and get zip ties to go around the bases to keep the drop side from coming down.
As an extra precaution, try and find a large, thin piece of cardboard or posterboard and tie that to the railing. It should keep little fingers and toes and small heads from getting stuck between the railings. My one aunt had a problem with a drop down crib years ago and that's what she ended up doing until it could be fixed.
I feel bad for short folks and those in wheelchairs. My local news said they're trying to get rid of drop down cribs period, so I guess they're going to have to risk dropping the kid while in their chair or balancing on a step stool. =/
I know I was really worried when I first heard about the recall. Luckily our for the twins isn't on the list. Whew.
A coworker had one of the cribs for his children and he always had problems, but the company sent him a repair kit months ago and he said they haven't had any problem since.
