To the HP readers...

I know this sounds stupid, but I have a question regarding spells.

If you have an object that's normal size, can you can Reducio to shrink it down, and then Engorgio to bring it back to regular size?

ETA: I realise that might sound a little dirty, but it isn't. It's in reference to luggage. ;p

Does it retain mass? Increasing in density as it shrinks and losing it as it's restored?

ACK SCIENCE!

*runs for life*

It's bigger on the inside.

I would think that you could but I think wizard luggage would be marketed as something along the lines of Mary Poppins' bag: shove as much as you want in it, no wrinkles and no broken arm from how heavy it is! Will wonders ever cease, etc.

But I'd totally do it for something like transporting a couch overseas or something.

And I giggled over how dirty your question sounded. Tee-hee!

Well -- it's for a thing I'm writing that snuck up on me this morning (Stupid Sergio Mendes).

Draco is traveling by Portkey, and he had to take luggage. But he had a lot of it, so it didn't make sense to me to have it knocking around while he was in transit, so I want to shrink it down, and then bring it back to normal size after he gets to his location.

I totally didn't realise how dirty the question sounded until after I read it again. 0:)

Or maybe you could just use Finite Incantatem to take off the Reducio spell?

Maybe.

So, theoretically, you could use Reducio to shrink it down?

I agree with [livejournal.com profile] theheartless69, I think you could just use Finite Incantatem to take it off. And if not that, then maybe you could use Engorgio; since magic is a lot of the times mentally-based, wouldn't how large or small something is be based on what you imagined it would be? Like Draco would imagine it at normal size, so it would return to normal size.

If nothing else, you could just skip mentioning the spells altogether, lol. Like, "He shrunk the luggage." Let the reader imagine what he used! ;D

Now there's an idea!

Well, I think with the incantations, it's the wizard who controls how the spells work. If you use Reducio, you control how small the object gets. Likewise, if you use Engorgio, you control how big it gets.

In the fourth book, Bagman uses Sonorus to make his voice loud, and Quitus to make it normal again. It's the control of the witch or wizard.

That's exactly what I needed to know.

Thank you, m'dear!
