Hedgehog Huckey

sexyscholarThat is what I'm calling it. I cannot bring myself to say "mate." Just doesn't sound right to me.
Anyway.
Dave and Amanda (ex-roommate and best gal) brought RJ over on Sunday. RJ is huge now. Very big and very slow, especially in comparison to Spork. The last time I saw RJ, he was Spork's size. I never thought he would get so frucking large.
Almost immediately, he started sniffing at Spork. But she was not having it. He'd nuzzle. She'd run. He'd nudge. She'd run. Too fast for him to catch up with her. They separated for a while. We put them in the bath together. RJ had poop on his head (he likes to roll around in it, apparently) and Spork likes to swim.
After his spines had been weighed down with water, RJ got really slow.
Nothing happened for a while. Just the nugding and running. To say that female hedgies play hard to get is a gross understatement. At one point, checking on them, I could see that they were locked together at Spork's side. I guess RJ tried nudging her again, and she finally put her spines up. When I pulled them apart, I could see blood on Spork's spines from where she had punctured RJ. Ouchies.
This morning, RJ was squeaking at Spork. Basically the hedgie equivalent of "pleasebebbepleasebebbebebbebebbeplease." He squeaked. And squeaked. And squeaked.
Did I mention he squeaked?
Then they tussled some more. RJ was in position, but I think he was trying to get Spork in the right place and cooperative.
Finally, they slowed down quite a bit, then they sort of swayed back and forth for a minute or two.
Spork detached herself and went to the other side of the cage. RJ followed, but not nudging. He's just been hanging close to her.
I guess that was the hedgehog huckey.
They're picking RJ up tonight. We'll see if we made hedgie babies in a few days. Gestation is only about 35 days, so it won't take long if indeed she is preggers.

The female doesn't want it so much as she just gives in so he'll leave her alone.
