They can bite, but Spork has never bitten me. I consider myself lucky.
They eat hedgehog food. Really, there's a food mix especially made for them. The brand I use has corn, wheat, and other grains, along with raisins and bananas. They also like to eat mealworms, which is kinda gross, but you can buy them freeze-dried at the pet shop.
Spork also likes to both dry and moist cat food. :)
They are very small, and they love to burrow into things, so you have to be careful when they're running around. I managed to lose Spork behind my fridge once. Oops.
Yes, they can indeed be prickly. But usually only if they're agitated or scared. Otherwise, her spines feel like a stiff brush. They'll never be a "cuddly" animal, but they will tolerate being petted.
I'm lucky, Spork took to me really quickly. I loves her. :)
